14 Christmas Films That We Can’t Help But Love

It may still be three weeks until the most wonderful day of the year arrives, but you’ve possibly already got the urge to decorate a tree, turn your bedroom into a winter wonderland and add ‘All I want for Christmas’ to every playlist imaginable. To celebrate your (already) festive mood, we asked our New Lookers to choose some of their most-loved films for Christmastime. Here their favourite fourteen titles…

1. Love Actually

If you ever needed proof that December’s the season for romance, just look to Richard Curtis’ Love Actually. The perfect comfort watch, we’re sure that you’ll fall in love it by the line, “I’m in love and there’s nothing that I can do.”

2. A Christmas Carol

Originally written by Charles Dickens, this Christmas classic has been remade over 16 times. But, The Muppet’s version is our favourite by far. Featuring Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, what’s not to love?

3. Home Alone

When winter hits, all we want to do is curl up in front of the telly and watch Home Alone 1, 2 and 3 back to back. Expect Nineties nostalgia and Christmas pop songs that are so bad they’re good.

4. Elf

A lot of Christmas stories revolve around stories of Santa Claus and his sleigh. But, Elf, follows Buddy (a jolly human elf) and his quest to find his biological father. Expect tonnes of laugh out loud moments.

5. The Holiday

Set in a countryside cottage, Cameron Diaz (Amanda) meets Kate Winslet (Iris) for one of the most picturesque Christmas films. But, what if you’re more of a Jude Law or Jack Black fan? No problem – they feature in it, too.

6. Cinderella

Paying homage to Walt Disney’s age-old classic isn’t easy. But, thanks to its cast (think Whitney Houston, Brandy and Whoopi Goldberg), this is the version that we’ll be spending the holiday season watching.

7. Noelle

We’ve been excitedly expecting the release of 2019’s Noelle. Produced by Walt Disney, starring ‎Anna Kendrick‎ and a floating reindeer named Snowcone, it’s worth the wait.

8. The Nightmare Before Christmas

There’s so much to love about this time of year – the anthems, the good cheer, and spending time with loved ones. But, with a heart that’s “two sizes too small”, the Grinch needs a lot of convincing from Cindy Lou.

10. Santa Claus: The Movie

For many, Santa Claus: The Movie showcases everything that a Christmas film should represent – elves, reindeer and a whole lot of festive magic. Now celebrating its 34th anniversary, get ready to love it all over again.

11. It’s a Wonderful Life

Demonstrating that Christmas can also be a not-so-merry time of year, Frank Capra's It’s a Wonderful Life focuses on a man named George Bailey. No spoilers, but we think you’ll love the heart-warming conclusion.

12. Last Christmas

A 2019 release that will instantly get you in the festive spirit, thanks to its love story, recognisable cast (think Emilia Clarke) and scenes of family celebrations. We’re in love with it already.

13. The Family Stone

The Family Stone came on-screen in December 2005, and soon became a Christmas classic. The two things that you need to know about it is that it headlines Sarah Jessica Parker and, once it’s on, you won’t want to turn it off.

14. Deck the Halls

What better way to finish our to-watch list than with Deck the Halls. With (tonnes of) LED lights, WinterFests and a competition for the crowning of “the Christmas guy” – it’s the Christmas movie you’ve been waiting for.
